Roof edges and corners

The perfect finish for your roof

A roof is only truly finished when it's perfectly protected against wind and weather. Roof edges and corners form the crucial transition between your roof and the exterior walls of your home, garden shed, garage or outbuilding. They prevent penetrating moisture, stop your roofing from being blown away and ensure a sleek, aesthetic finish. Aquaplan roof profiles are specifically designed for the outer edges of both flat and pitched roofs (at the sides). With our smart solutions, you can easily apply the finishing touches yourself.

Aquaplan's range of roof edges and corners

Every roof is unique. That is why Aquaplan offers a range of different materials and profiles, so you can always find the perfect match for your bitumen or EPDM roof.

Black edge trim: stylish and extremely strong

Looking for a modern, aesthetic finish for your flat roof? Our black edge trim is made from high-quality polyester combined with fibreglass. This makes the profile extremely strong, impact-resistant and unaffected by ageing or atmospheric influences. Even in places where you cut the profile, it cannot rust or oxidise. Because the material is black through and through, minor damage is never visible.

Aluminium edge trim: specially for DIYers

Our aluminium edge trim is designed for the aesthetic finishing and perfect waterproofing of all flat and pitched roofs. The big advantage? It's completely ‘monkeyproof’. In other words, the profile features a smart gutter on the underside and a clear marking line on the top. This means that, as a DIYer, you know exactly where to apply the waterproofing sealant. In addition, an aluminium connecting plate with spacer is supplied, so you always maintain the correct spacing for the expansion and contraction of the metal.

Aluminium outside corner: seamless corner finishing

The corners of a roof are the most vulnerable points for leaks. With the pre-formed aluminium outside corner, you ensure perfect waterproofing. Just like the straight profiles, this outside corner is equipped with the handy gutter and marking line to prevent installation mistakes.

Aluminium flashing profile: the perfect transition

Do you need to create a watertight connection between a flat roof and rising masonry? Then the Aluminium Flashing Profile is the ideal solution. This aesthetic clamping profile replaces traditional, heavy zinc or lead flashings and prevents water from seeping between the wall and the roofing. It is easy to install using nail plugs and is then waterproofed with sealant.

Why high-quality edge trim pays off

Installing the right roof edges and corners offers nothing but benefits for your building project.
  • Optimal protection against water ingress: no chance for penetrating damp or seeping rainwater.
  • Wind resistance of the roofing: the profile protects the edges, preventing the wind from getting a grip on your roofing or EPDM.
  • Aesthetic upgrade: your roof gains a sleek, professional finish that increases the value of your construction.
  • Protection against pests: birds, mice and other pests cannot nest under the roof edge.
  • A durable investment: polyester profiles easily last 25 years or more. Our robust aluminium profiles have a lifespan of up to 30 years and are also infinitely recyclable without loss of quality.

Comparison table: Choose the right profile

Alu flashing profile Aluminium 30 years Replaces lead/zinc flashings on rising masonry

Step-by-step guide: Install your own roof edges

Thanks to the smart design of Aquaplan's profiles, installation is easy for every DIYer.

Installing black edge trim (with EPDM)

  1. Place the black edge trim on top of the EPDM membrane.
  2. Secure the profile using black roof edge screws. Start 5 cm from the end and then place a screw every 25 cm. Thanks to the integrated EPDM washer on these screws, there is no need to apply additional sealant around the screws!
  3. Insert a straight polyester connector into the vertical section of the next profile and leave a 2 mm gap from the previous profile.
  4. Creating corners? Simply mitre-cut the polyester profiles with a hand saw and use a corner joining piece for a perfect fit.

Installing aluminium profiles & outside corners

  1. The basics: lay the EPDM or bitumen roofing on the roof. Always start at the corner and position the pre-formed 90° corner piece first.
  2. Installing the connectors: slide the supplied connectors into the profile. These spacers ensure the metal parts do not touch each other, allowing the aluminium to expand and contract with temperature changes.
  3. Pre-drill or screw: pre-drill the corner piece through the indicated slot on the top (approx. 4 cm from the side and 2 cm from the corner) or use Aquaplan Self-Tapping Screws (35 mm).
  4. Apply sealant: fill the practical sealant gutter on the underside of the profile with Roof Glue EPDM of Roof Glue EPDM Details & Seams. Apply a small amount of adhesive to the ends and joints too.
  5. Secure and repeat: screw the corner piece into place. Now install the straight aluminium edge trim. Slide them over the connectors until they reach the marking point. Secure them every 40 cm through the indicated slot and neatly fill the joints with Roof Glue EPDM.
Tip from an Aquaplan expert: Planning to get started with aluminium flashing profiles? Use a drill and hammer to secure the profile to the wall with nail plugs. Don't forget to seal the top edge with Roof Seal Mastic or Roof Glue EPDM to create a 100% waterproof barrier.

Frequently asked questions about roof edges and corners

Why do the aluminium profiles have a gutter on the underside and a marking line on the top?

You apply Roof Seal Mastic or detail sealant into the gutter on the underside. When you drive the screw through the marking line on the top, it passes straight through the sealant underneath. This automatically creates a perfect, watertight seal around each screw.

What makes Aquaplan profiles different from others on the market?

Most standard profiles available from hardware stores are long and awkward to handle. Aquaplan profiles are exactly 2 metres long. This is specifically designed for easy transport: they fit effortlessly in a car or on a trailer. In addition, standard profiles often do not feature our smart 'gutter and marking line' system, meaning you need plenty of experience to avoid leaks. Aquaplan makes the job easy and reliable for everyone!
