Successfully carry out repairs to your roof, gutter or driveway? Here’s how to do it yourself!
Everyone encounters it sooner or later: damage to the roof, a leaking gutter, potholes in the driveway, or cracks in the wall. It’s not the end of the world, as long as you act in time. With the right products, repairs aren’t that difficult, especially with Aquaplan’s handy solutions. As DIY experts, we help you successfully complete every job. We’ll tell you all about what causes the damage and how to deal with it properly.
How damage occurs and why it’s best not to delay repairs
The most common types of damage around the house? Roof leaks, fissures in exterior walls, damaged gutters, or cracks in asphalt. Such problems are often caused by wear and tear, extreme weather conditions or human error.
The weather, in particular, plays a major role:
- Rainfall leads to water infiltration, especially with ageing roof coverings.
- Clogged gutters cause water to build up, increasing the risk of leaks.
- Frost and thaw cycles cause materials to shrink and expand, resulting in cracks.
- Sunlight (UV rays) dries out materials, making them brittle.
- Strong winds and hail can physically damage or tear off roof coverings.
The longer you wait to carry out a repair, the worse the problem becomes. Luckily, there’s good news: you can repair damage quickly and effectively with the right products. And best of all, you can do it all by yourself!

Tackle the most common repairs yourself
Cracks, blisters and tears in the roof are common, especially in older or bitumen roofing. The right approach depends on the severity of the problem and the weather conditions:
- For minor repairs in dry weather, Roof Repair Regular or Roof Seal Mastic is ideal. These flexible pastes repair cracks, tears and blisters, and adhere to almost all substrates.
- Need to carry out an emergency repair during rainy weather? Then Roof Repair Wet is the perfect solution. This waterproof paste can be applied to damp surfaces.
- For larger or structural renovations, it’s best to choose durable products such as:
- Roof Coating Regular: a solvent-free, water-based roof coating. Can be applied from as low as 5 °C.
- Roof Coating Strong: a superior elastic rubber coating with a long lifespan.
- Roof Coating Expert: adheres to almost any substrate without a primer, even tricky materials like slates or corrugated sheets. Can even be applied in light rain.

Gutter repairs
Got a leaking gutter? This is often caused by loose welding joints or ageing materials. Depending on the type of damage, you can choose:
- Roof Repair Gutters for localised repairs: a flexible, solvent-free repair paste that adheres to all common materials.
- Roof Coating Gutters for a full renovation. This self-levelling renovation layer provides complete protection against corrosion, acid rain, and UV rays.
Both solutions are easy to apply and, once cured, form an elastic, waterproof covering.

Asphalt and concrete damage
Potholes, cracks or depressions in driveways or paths? These are usually caused by a combination of traffic loads, temperature fluctuations and poor drainage.
Aquaplan offers two solutions:
- Road Repair Asphalt Filler: solid cold asphalt for filling potholes and holes.
- Road Repair Asphalt Refresh: this liquid bitumen emulsion nourishes old asphalt surfaces, fills hairline cracks and provides a non-slip finish.

Tips for a good repair
A successful repair starts with proper preparation.
- Tools: roofing knife, palette knife, gloves and suitable cleaning agents.
- Materials: the right product, possibly reinforced with Anti-Crack for extra strength.
Be mindful of the weather: most products work best in dry conditions and at temperatures above 5°C. Only Roof Repair Wet can be used in wet weather.
Most repairs take less than 15 minutes, and the repaired surface is often rain-resistant shortly afterwards.
Preventing damage with preventive measures
Prevention is better than a cure. That’s why it’s a good idea to inspect your roof and gutters twice a year. After autumn, clearing accumulated leaves that impede drainage is especially important.
Use preventive roof coatings like Roof Paint Reflect Alu or Roof Paint Reflect White. They extend the life of your roof, protect against UV rays and help keep the indoor climate more pleasant.
Inspect your asphalt driveway before winter for cracks. Water that freezes in a crack expands, increasing the risk of damage.
How long does a repair last?
The lifespan depends on the product used:
- Roof Coating Regular: at least 3 years
- Roof Coating Strong: at least 5 years
- Roof Coating Expert: at least 7 years
With proper use and maintenance, these products often last much longer. If you notice that the coating is drying out or showing small cracks, simply apply a new layer.
